What is Grade Point Average?
A GPA is a weighted average, and the weighting is the part people miss. It is not the average of your grades — it is the average of your grade points weighted by how many credit hours each course carried.
That distinction has real consequences. A B in a four-credit course affects your GPA more than an A in a one-credit course, because the four-credit course contributes four times as much weight to both the top and bottom of the calculation.
Understanding it as a weighted average also makes it obvious why a GPA becomes harder to move over time: each new semester is a smaller fraction of an ever-growing total.
The formula — how to calculate Grade Point Average

Dividing by total credits rather than by the number of courses is what makes it weighted. Averaging the grade values alone gives a different and usually wrong answer.
Step-by-step example
- 01Four courses: Math A (3 credits), English B+ (3), Science A− (4), History B (3).
- 02Convert to grade points: A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, A− = 3.7, B = 3.0.
- 03Quality points per course: 4.0 × 3 = 12.0; 3.3 × 3 = 9.9; 3.7 × 4 = 14.8; 3.0 × 3 = 9.0.
- 04Total quality points: 12.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 45.7.

Why later semesters move your GPA less
This follows directly from the arithmetic and surprises a lot of students.
After one 15-credit semester at 3.0, your GPA is 45 ÷ 15 = 3.0. A perfect 4.0 in the next 15 credits gives (45 + 60) ÷ 30 = 3.5 — a half-point jump.
After six semesters at 3.0 (90 credits, 270 quality points), that same perfect semester gives (270 + 60) ÷ 105 = 3.14. The identical effort now moves the number by 0.14 instead of 0.5.
The reason is simply that the denominator has grown. Each new semester is a smaller fraction of the total, so early grades are disproportionately influential — which is the honest argument for taking the first year seriously, and the honest reason a late recovery is slow rather than impossible.
Weighted and unweighted are different things
Many high schools award extra points for honours, AP or IB courses — an A might count 5.0 rather than 4.0 — producing weighted GPAs above 4.0. Universities frequently recalculate applicants onto a common unweighted scale so candidates from different schools can be compared. A 4.3 weighted GPA is not directly comparable to a 4.0 unweighted one.

Institutions vary. Some use no plus/minus grading at all, some cap A+ at 4.0, and some exclude pass/fail courses from the GPA entirely. Always check your own institution's scale before relying on a calculation.
What the calculation misses
An F is uniquely damaging because it contributes zero quality points while still adding its credits to the denominator. A failed three-credit course does not just fail to help — it actively drags the average down by inflating the divisor.
Withdrawals usually appear as W and are excluded from the GPA entirely, which is why withdrawing before a deadline is often better than finishing a course badly. The trade-off is slower progress toward a degree and, sometimes, financial aid implications.
Repeat policies vary considerably. Some institutions replace the original grade, some average both attempts, and some keep both on the transcript while counting only the higher one. This single policy difference can change a GPA substantially, so it is worth knowing your own before planning a retake.
Pass/fail courses typically earn credit without contributing quality points, which means they neither help nor harm the average — but they also cannot rescue it.
